The 1,2,3’s of Moving! Moving is an exciting time in everyone’s life! Looking forward through the periscope of life can be exhilarating, and stressful all in one glance. At Father & Son Moving we understand this life changing experience and offer the following planning advice to alleviate some of the stress of moving.

1. Research is critical to any successful move. First you want to find out about the area in which you are moving to. Go online and investigate the city, town, or area by logging onto their visitor’s center website. This is an excellent resource to find out what is important in the eyes of the city’s administration. Travel sites are an excellent resource to look at all the new places you and your family can enjoy. Also, log on to the town’s government site and find out about the town’s school system, and town regulations. Make it a family activity to investigate your new hometown!

2. Selecting the Right Moving Company is critical as well. We want you to make sure that your prized possessions arrive safely. When looking for the right moving company many questions should be asked. How long has the company been in business? Is the company reputable? Does the company have references we may contact? Make sure that you trust and verify your moving company. Visit the Better Business Bureau (www.BBB.com) or check out Yelp (www.yelp.com) for consumer reviews.

3. Time to Clean out your Glory Days! Do you have boxes of stuff that you haven’t opened since the last move? If so, it’s time to donate it to a local Goodwill, Salvation Army, or charity. Moving is the ideal time for a “life clean” and the “18th Month Rule” is in effect - if you have not touched it in the last 18 months then it has to go! We also recommend that you review the furniture you’re taking. Will everything fit in the new place? Ask lots of questions and clean out your closets as it’s time to start fresh!

4. Think of Rome! Moving requires the most precious resource – Time. We recommend that you begin your planning, purging, and packing 6-8 weeks in advance. We have found that if you accomplish a little bit at a time then your move will go significantly smoother and be less stressful.

5. Plan the moving day. Make sure that you have an overnight bag packed so that you are ready for life’s basic needs i.e. food, drink, change of clothes, toothbrush, and toothpaste. Plan for your pets too! Make sure you are prepared for their needs. Be at the new location prior to the moving truck arriving so that you can orchestrate the delivery. If possible map out how you would like each room setup so everything can be unloaded efficiently. The more planning and preparation you do ahead of time the easier moving day will be!
